Thailand's Police are a source of discomfort and annoyance for many Thai expats, but my experience has not been bad with them. Not saying it couldn't go bad at some point, but after 10 years in Thailand I have had basically good experiences overall. Far better than some other foreigners in the country.
Basically, if you're pulled over by the police while in your vehicle or on your motorbike, just wai them, smile, and try not to speak Thai unless you're really good. This works in most situations, and they'll either just send you on your way with a "Bpy bpy" or they'll fine you a few hundred baht (a few dollars) and you'll be on your way, happy you contributed to putting food in their kids mouths.
The heart of the problem is that Thailand's culture is built on corruption. It is at the highest levels and the lowest. It is built into the system and isn't going away. If you think you can argue your way out of a simple $12 fine, you might find yourself sitting in a jail cell and paying 15,000 THB instead. That happened to a guy I talk about in the video. Situations can go from bad to worse quickly and really, you don't want that. What you want is to just get on your merry way and stay out of the police's hair.
Inside the video is my experience with Thai Police in tourist areas, rural areas, being stopped in cars and on motorbikes. I also include 2 funny stories about situations with Thailand's police and excise officers that are fun to think back on, but at the time were not funny at all.
WHAT TO DO WHEN PULLED OVER?
1. Wai the officer(s) and say "Sawasdee (sawatdee) krup" and smile profusely.
2. If you cannot understand him - just smlle and say OK, OK over and over.
3. If you have a license or passport, hand it to him. Smiling.
Usually that's where it ends - you'll either be on your way quickly without a fine, or paying a small fine. Either way is a win for you, so just pay the measly fine and get on your way.
Note - police officers in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, and other tourist destinations probably speak English well enough to get what they want from you. Just give it to them and definitely don't argue.
