Today on Hang Nak Nature Trail, I found a snake on a trail I was running on! Nothing better than that really because A) I'm not expecting it, I'm not looking. B) I'm running anyway and having a blast, it's just a bonus when I get to see a snake too.

This was a big green Gonyosoma oxycephalum, or, Red-tailed Racer. It's a rat snake, and one of the most beautiful snakes in Southeast Asia - easily. The scales and the interstitial pattern is awesome - bright greens, black and white diagonal bands. The eyes are greenish blue, and the tongue is blue on the outside with black in the center. Mind-blowing colors.

So, I was running down the hill and this bright green snake was laying right on the trail - frozen, hoping I didn't see it. I froze too and we just stared at each other while I eased my little Nikon AW100 camera out of my waist pack.

This was about 1.5 meters long - 5 feet - and was exceptionally pretty.

I've been up this hill many times, it isn't like I see snakes all the time here, so it was a VERY good day!

A reader of ThailandSnakes.com wrote to ask me some questions about how to go about setting up a snake rescue type center, or how to gain employment in an existing snake rescue center.

The answer is that there aren't many or maybe not even any in Thailand any longer. One guy in Koh Samui, Phil Brookie set up a Samui Snake Rescue service, and did that for a couple of years. I haven't heard anything from him in years. Not sure if he is still there doing it or not.

Anyway, if you're interested in coming to Thailand to work with snakes, you basically have to just come and self-finance it on your own. You can teach English or work for a dive center, work online, whatever you can get going. There isn't any foreigner making money working with snakes in Thailand - legally anyway. I don't know anyone doing it illegally either, but probably there are some. Recently a woman came from Russia and wanted to buy snakes and find snakes she could take back to Russia and wanted MY HELP! hahha! Dumbass... anyway, you can't export snakes from the country. You can't own any venomous snakes. There are little opportunities for doing anything here with snakes. Anyone in Thailand working with snakes is doing so out of pure enjoyment and not getting anything monetary in return.

This is one of the world's most beautiful snakes - the green Oriental Whip Snake, or Ahaetulla prasina. This one is over a meter long. It has a thin body, about two fingers in thickness. It has a very long tapered tail that is reddish brown.

When aggravated and ready to defend itself, which it does weakly, it coils up in a multiple "S" configuration and flares it's neck vertically - opposite of how a cobra hoods. When it flares, you can see an amazing black and white checkered pattern emerge between the scales.

This snake has some mild venom. It is rear-fanged. I've been bitten by it a number of times and had no reaction to the venom at all. I don't know anyone that has had a bad reaction. These snakes, though arboreal, I find on the ground most often.

On this mountain I've seen about 8 of these snakes, all of them except this one, on the ground. I think they hunt the small lizards that are running all over the leaf-litter looking for insects.

Thailand has an abundance of wildlife. I hope that's always the case, but the rainforest is disappearing, and many wild animals are eaten or slaughtered for ridiculous reasons. I saw monocled cobra heads cut off with a pair of scissors, thrown into a plastic baggie with some blood, and given to a Muslim couple who had a baby born with asthma. Apparently they believed sprinkling the blood of the snake on the baby's forehead would help mitigate or cure the problem.

This amazing little triangle keelback snake appeared to have 3-eyes when I saw it the first time. On closer inspection it was a tick, who obviously through some miracle of evolution decided to mimic the krait's eyeball. Therefore effectively eliminating the human threat because it is our natural inclination to help the snake if there is a tick on it's head, but if it's another eyeball, we're instead fascinated by it and take better care of the snake (and it's freeloader) as a result.

I frickin love nature...

Anyway yeah, here are three guys that spend far too much time photographing snakes and other beasties found in the tropical Thailand rainforest.

This little keelback was found in a small man-made pond near a bungalow. These are rear-fanged colubrids, but not known to inflict medically significant bites. This one did not even attempt to bite, which is usually the case with this snake species.

This species prefers habitat like small streams, ponds, and swamps in primary forest, rain puddles, and small lakes or ponds in villages. It occurs from lowlands up to around 1,350 meters elevation. Xenochrophis trianguligerus feeds on frogs and tadpoles. Females lay 5-8 eggs.
