Bright green just stunning snake found sleeping in a tree about a meter off the ground around 200 meters elevation. These are common tree snakes called the Oriental Whip Snake. Ahaetulla prasina.

This snake eats primarily small lizards and is arboreal and diurnal. There are a number of color phases including grey, green, and yellow. There is another snake that looks just like this Oriental Whip Snake, it is called the Malayan Whip Snake (Ahaetulla mycterizans). There is a solid anal scale on A. mycterizans and it is split with A. prasina. There are also some slight color differences with A. mycterizans tending toward white and not as brilliant bright green as A. prasina.

There is another snake very similar to this as well, Ahaetulla nasuta. The Long-nosed Whip Snake. There is a small appendage type thing on the end of the nose - making it even longer than A. prasina.

These snakes grow to about 2 meters in length and are common across Thailand, and much of South and Southeast Asia.

Deadly snakes are all over Thailand, and this is one that has venom which attacks the kidneys, causing catastrophic kidney failure in some cases. Originally these snakes were thought to be harmless. They thrived in the pet-trade because they are beautiful, small, and keep fairly well in a tank.

People were bitten, but for a long time there was no significant envenomation. Recently that changed, and people have died as a result of bites from this snake. This keelback is rear-fanged and has very potent venom, but it rarely gets a chance to inject enough during a bite to do any major damage.

The problem comes not during a quick bite and release, but a bite where the snake is allowed to get a good bite in and hold down, even chewing the venom into the person being bitten. Enough venom is able to reach the bloodstream to cause serious damage, and even death.

A couple years ago I got a frantic message from the father of a son in Phuket, Thailand whose son was bitten by his pet Rhabdophis subminiatus. The snake bit down twice, once for over 20 seconds as I recall. Possibly over 30 seconds. The boy was in the hospital in intensive care for 2 weeks with many medical issues, one of them being the kidneys failing.

Please be careful with all snakes in Thailand. I get so many photos of people holding snakes they found in Thailand and then asking me what snake it is! How ridiculous is that? There are over 60 venomous snakes in the country, and over 200 snakes overall. Those aren't good odds. Don't pick up any snake.
