Climbing 4,287 steps up Gunung Raya Mountain on Langkawi Island, Malaysia. Kampung Buku Malaysia Park. Tangga Helang Seribu Kenangan - means, “Steps of a Thousand Memories.”What to do on Langkawi Island in Malaysia? Climb a mountain, that's what. There are a couple of places where you can climb to mountain peaks on the island. The one I did two days in a row was "Gunung Raya." There are 4,287 concrete steps going straight up the side of the hill. There was nobody else climbing at 4 p.m. when I went the first day and nobody at 8:30 a.m. the next day either. Seems not many people like steps. The views at the top are spectacular. This video gives a taste of what Langkawi is like - from the ferry pier in Satun, Thailand, to the exterior and interior of the ferry, the island of Langkawi through the window of the boat as we approach. The pier as I exit - and the big parking lot - the drive over to my hotel - Hotel Panorama at the base of Gunung Raya mountain. Then I take you through the park and up the stairs to the top. At the top of Gunung Raya is a tower. You pay 10 ringgit (100 Thai Baht; $3 USD) and climb to the top. You are now around 900 meters high. They give you a cup of warm tea (it's chilly with the wind). Great views from the top if not raining. Rainy season about same as in Thailand. Dry season December through April.If you get a chance to go visit Langkawi and see the sights, this is worth it. So is the other 7 pools waterfall on the western side of the island at Mat Cincang. There are something like 650 steps to climb there and a trail through the rainforest.

This amazing little triangle keelback snake appeared to have 3-eyes when I saw it the first time. On closer inspection it was a tick, who obviously through some miracle of evolution decided to mimic the krait's eyeball. Therefore effectively eliminating the human threat because it is our natural inclination to help the snake if there is a tick on it's head, but if it's another eyeball, we're instead fascinated by it and take better care of the snake (and it's freeloader) as a result.

I frickin love nature...

Anyway yeah, here are three guys that spend far too much time photographing snakes and other beasties found in the tropical Thailand rainforest.

This little keelback was found in a small man-made pond near a bungalow. These are rear-fanged colubrids, but not known to inflict medically significant bites. This one did not even attempt to bite, which is usually the case with this snake species.

This species prefers habitat like small streams, ponds, and swamps in primary forest, rain puddles, and small lakes or ponds in villages. It occurs from lowlands up to around 1,350 meters elevation. Xenochrophis trianguligerus feeds on frogs and tadpoles. Females lay 5-8 eggs.
